Sneak-peak into the IQ and Reasoning based workshops

Sneak-peak into the IQ and Reasoning based workshops:

5 to 6.5 years age workshops:
The topics covered for this age group are:
  • 1. Visual Reasoning:
    • While visual reasoning is a vast topic, we chose to cover patterns, sequences and analogy patterns in great detail. A good hold on these topics will lay a strong foundation for your child to grasp more complicated visual reasoning elements as they grow older. The types of patterns and sequences covered are:

    • Elements that move upwards or downwards
    • Elements that move clock-wise
    • Elements that move anti-clockwise
    • The elements used are basic shapes such as square, triangle, rectangle, alphabets and colours.

  • 2. Right and Left:
  • The left and right directions are often confusing for kids of this age. We reiterate this concept because it is not only fundamental to grasping various kinds of reasoning problems but is also a key life skill. Further, in our conversations too, we tend to use these terms often. This kind of a question is likely to appear in exams such as Olympiads.

  • 3. Coding/Decoding:
  • Coding and decoding is a very important topic under verbal reasoning. Essentially, it the same thing – spotting patterns in alphabets. For younger kids, this topic introduces them to the world of combinations and possibilities using just the 26 alphabets in English language.

  • 4. General Knowledge:
  • General Knowledge for kids of this age group is practically everything that happens in their daily lives. Young kids discover new things daily which adds to their knowledge bank. GK based riddles and puzzles are surely a fun way to help kids remember few interesting facts about our wonderful universe.

  • 5. Sudoku:
  • Sudoku is a fun IQ game and we cover 4x4 Sudoku in the workshop for this age group.

  • 6. Matrix Patterns:
  • A matrix is nothing but a grid or a table. We introduce kids to the concept of rows and columns, including training them on how to identify a particular cell in the table. The pattern within the matrix are based on individual rows or columns. These combine visual and verbal reasoning inside a matrix, as the name suggests.

  • 7. Picture Inferences:
  • A picture speaks a thousand words and we want kids to unleash their imagination and trying figuring out answers to some not very obvious questions. These questions require logical thinking, which they are not generally used to since they are bound by the textbook, method-oriented studies in school. These questions tap the right brain aspects fostering logical imagination skills which is a very practical and useful life skill as well.

  • 8. Relationships:
  • Identifying how two different things are connected to each other again requires the ability to think logically. Relationships could mean things that are the raw material and the end product, something that comes before or after a particular event and so on.

  • 9. Fun Games:
  • Playing fun and interesting games while learning is a very crucial element of these workshops. In my opinion, there is no better way than the play-way method of learning. Hence, not only are the activities designed in a fun and visually engaging format, there are fun IQ -based games included in the sessions at regular intervals.

6.5 to 8 years age workshops

The topics covered for this age group are same as the ones for 5 to 6.5 years – hence it is very important that you read the above points in detail. The difficulty level for this age group is a notch higher than for the 5 to 6.5-year age group.

  • 1. Visual Reasoning:
    • We cover the same set of topics under visual reasoning – patterns, sequences and analogy patterns. However, the activities include the following new features:

    • A combination of patterns – such as forward movement of shapes and clockwise movement of colours or backward and anticlockwise movements.
    • Higher number of elements.
    • The elements used are a variety of shapes such as stars, diamond, and pentagon.
  • 2. Right and Left:
  • Revision of right and left directions along with identifying directions for a person standing opposite to you.

  • 3. Coding and Decoding:
  • For these activities, we are using letters from A to Z, unlike for smaller kids where we were using alphabets till A to M. Also, coding and decoding patterns involve numbers till 1-100 for this age group.

  • 4. General Knowledge:
  • A small quiz in addition to the facts learnt.

  • 5. Sudoku:
  • 6x6 Sudoku matrix

  • 6. Matrix Patterns:
  • Making words by spotting letters in a particular cell of a given matrix is the additional concept taught in this topic.

  • 7. Picture Inferences:
  • More observational and general knowledge concepts are introduced under this topic.

  • 8. Relationships:
  • Again, a more complex and twisted relationships incorporated through matrices.

  • 9. Fun Games:
  • Games will always be a part of our learning methodology.

8 to 10 years age workshops

For this age group, we introduce numerical reasoning since kids are now comfortable with addition, subtraction and basic multiplication and division.

  • 1. Visual Reasoning:
  • Spotting patterns, completing the sequence and analogy sequences that have 6-8 elements moving in a combination (right, left, downwards, upwards, clockwise or anticlockwise). These are multi- variable patterns which are a good challenge of thinking skills.

  • 2. General Knowledge:
  • Reasoning and popular general knowledge facts intertwined into fun GK riddles and puzzles.

  • 3. Coding/Patterns:
  • For this age group, the coding activities are two-step – for example, a picture could be equal to a certain number code. For this, kids will have to first decode the picture to something that can be converted to numbers. Patterns include identifying how a particular set of alphabets change to a different set of alphabets and applying the same rules to a new word. This is one of the most common and important reasoning topics that appear in most competitive exams held for kids globally.

  • 4. Memory Games:
  • Different kinds of memory games – disappearing elements, remembering count of elements etc. These are fun and test focus and memory at the same time.

  • 5. Number Series:
  • We cover one of the most important topics under numerical reasoning – which is completing the missing numbers in a series. The numbers could be following a pattern of either multiplication, division, subtraction or addition, which the child has to figure out and use the same pattern to complete the missing numbers.

  • 6. Math Reasoning:
  • Covers practical math-based problems such as calculating the time duration (for example, hours between 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM) and balancing a scale using the information given in the question. These questions involve basic mathematical operations but are out of the box, hence challenging your child’s ability to use math in daily life problems. Further, as we do these, we also explain some logical tricks and methods to enhance calculation speed.

  • 7. Picture Inferences:
  • Picture inferences for this age group is based on a higher focus and observation.

  • 8. Sudoku:
  • 9x9 Sudoku

  • 9. Logical Reasoning:
  • These activities include using logical inferences and deciding arrangements based on conditions given. For example, if A is older to B and B is older to C, A has to be older to C! Obviously, the activities have cross comparisons with around 5 or more people, hence the ability to think logically and decide is an exciting challenge. Under this topic, we also have activities which involve using eliminations in a tabular form and arriving at the correct conclusion.

  • 10. Mental Aptitude:
  • These are fun IQ challenges which test the ability to think logically and out of the box.

  • 11. Directions:
  • For this age group, we move forward to activities which include the four major directions – north, south, east and west along with right and left. Kids are expected to draw the correct path of travel based on the directions given in the question.

  • 12. Fun games:
  • Games and fun riddles are included at regular intervals to keep the sessions engaging.

11 to 14 years age bracket workshops

The last level in the reasoning workshop includes activities which are complementary to the school curriculum as well such as ratios and percentages. Also, the format of these activities is very similar to the ones included in the aptitude exams taken for post graduate programs. Further, we also encourage group discussions to solve activities for this age group, because I believe it is an important skill not only for the purpose of cracking interviews but also for handling conversations in a corporate setting.

The topics included in this module are:
  • 1. Visual Reasoning:
  • Apart from questions such as complete the sequence, we also cover activities such as wrong in the sequence wherein the child has to figure out two options that need to interchange to form a correct sequence. In this topic, we also cover codes given to pictures in which kids have to decode the logic and give codes to a new shape based on the same logic.

  • 2. Ratios:
  • These are word problems of a multiple kind that cover the ratios topic comprehensively.

  • 3. Coding/Patterns:
  • The patterns in the multi-variable series get challenging for kids to spot. Further, we also cover activities such as matching the words and the codes, and figuring out words/word formation in a matrix.

  • 4. IQ Games
  • Unique, out of the box thinking and fun games

  • 5. Relationships:
  • Covers immediate and extended families based on blood relations. These activities combine logical reasoning and relationships together, thereby strengthening their understanding on both the concepts.

  • 6. Math Reasoning:
  • hese questions also involve basic mathematical operations but are out of the box, hence challenging your child’s ability to use math in daily life problems.

  • 7. Decision Making:
  • This is a new, relevant and a very practical topic. In these activities, kids have to decide on a course of action based on the information given.

  • 8. Sudoku:
  • 9x9 Sudoku

  • 9. Logical Reasoning:
  • Logical reasoning activities that include three elements based on which kids have to decide the correct match through logical deductions (as explained in detail for the earlier age group). These activities also include deciding on the arrangements (short to tall, first to last etc) based on the information given in the question.

  • 10. Mental Aptitude:
  • These are fun IQ challenges which test the ability to think logically and out of the box.

  • 11. Directions:
  • The concepts of north, south, east, west, left and right are the same as the one for 8 to 10 years age group, however the difficulty level in one notch higher. Additionally, we will also cover speed and distance under this topic.

  • 12. Fun Games:
  • As always, a lot of games included at regular intervals throughout the topic.
